The youngest son of Iltutmish, Nasir al-Din Mahmud was brought to the throne by the nobles in 1246. A person of retiring disposition, he left the entire administration to his na'ib, Baha al-Din Balban (later Sul-tan Ghiyas al-Din Balban). Throughout his long reign, the pious sul-tan was much preoccupied with his religious and literary hobbies. He died in 1266; there is some basis for suspecting that he was poisoned by his ambitious na'ib.
